The Bright Light Social Hour is an American rock band from Austin, Texas. Born out of a university art-rock collective, the band first gained attention in Austin from their incendiary live performances and innovative vision of rock and roll. Melding southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues, and deep soul, their debut full-length album led to heightening critical acclaim, national touring, and a rare sweep of six awards at the SXSW 2011 Austin Music Awards, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. They are playing on Thursday at DC9 with NYC’s ever so NOT-boring entertainment band, Black Taxi, and joined us for our 5GB series before their show.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
When I was 12 or 13, my mom dropped a few friends and me at Emo’s in Austin to see this punk band Apocolypse Hoboken, but after getting in, we found out they’d run out of money and bailed on their tour. We were the only ones who stayed and watched the opening band, who hit me in the face with a broken drumstick. Kind of a wonder why I got so into live music.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
Definitely gonna have to say opening for Aerosmith the other night in Quebec City for 80-100,000 people. It was kinda terrifying but totally amazing and everyone was so nice!
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
The show that comes to mind is seeing The Mars Volta at Emo’s Austin in 2003. Totally changed my life.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
It’s always been a dream to play Exit Festival in Novi Sad, Serbia. I’ve always wanted to go there and the lineup is always amazing.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
If it’s okay to include some who are no longer us, I’d say: Daft Punk, James Brown and Led Zeppelin. If we could be tacked onto the beginning, that’d be alright with me.
