Dan Kelly is an Australian singer-songwriter and nephew to another famous Aussie musician, Paul Kelly. On June 4th both uncle and nephew will be performing at Eddie’s Attic. We caught up with Dan recently and discussed first shows, best gigs and dream lineups.
What’s the first show you ever attended?
I saw some covers bands as a kid, but the first big rock and roll show I went to was The Hoodoo Gurus and The Hard Ons at Boondall Entertainment Center in 1989 in Brisbane. It was really loud. My ears rang all week at school but I was stoked.
What is the best gig that you ever performed?
I did a good one at the Boogie Festival in Melbourne a couple of years back. I was a little blazed and played some quite lateral underwater sounding guitar solos. It’s a small crowd of Melburnians getting loose in the bush. Afterwards we followed this viking metal guy with a flaming torch into the forest to a hillbilly music stage. I pashed a dark eyed Jewish girl from the Gold Coast.
What is the best show you have ever seen?
Pavement Crooked Rain tour supported by the Dirty Three was a ripper.
No Means No at the Livid Festival in Brisbane.
Jonathan Richman at the Continental Cafe.
Sonic Youth playing Daydream Nation in Berlin.
Gig you would most like to play?
Madison Square Garden. And if I ever do I’m going to wear that awesome Jimmy Page dragon suit.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION
