Check Out: Kenny Leon Interviewed in Atlanta Magazine

Kenny Leon, who’s True Colors Theatre Company recently put on an amazing production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, was interviewing in Atlanta Magazine about his impending move to Broadway:

Hometown guy Leon travels to New York to direct Washington in this month’s Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Fences. He says the two-time Oscar winner — who will play burned-out Pittsburgh trash collector and former Negro League hitter Troy Maxson — will get no special treatment when rehearsals start in March. “I’ve been doing that for years,” says Leon of the push-up ritual, as he digs into a plate of stir-fried chicken and rice at Saigon Basil, next to the theater’s makeshift rehearsal studio on Piedmont Avenue. “I did that with Phylicia Rashad when we did Gem of the Ocean on Broadway.”

Back in the ’70s, regular cabs didn’t travel to Pittsburgh’s urban Hill District. Jitney (set in 1977) follows the lives of men hustling to make a living as jitneys — unofficial, unlicensed cabbies. The gypsy station is in turmoil when the boss’ son returns after 20 years in prison; drama continues when the station faces possible demolition due to urban redevelopment. A slice of August Wilson’s life: the script, the stories, the way the characters interact with each other – it’s truly Wilson at his purist.

Directed by Derrick Sanders, Jitney will run from May 5 – 30 at True Colors Theatre at the Southwest Arts Center and from June 5 – 27 at Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center.

Following the success of his latest big screen role in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Alec is one of the hottest comedians in the US today and is excited to be back on his home turf to play one of the most beautiful and historically significant gay venues in the country.

Shann Carr – Since 2000 Shann has been the sole lesbian entertainer on over 20 Atlantis cruises. “That’s right 2000 gay men… and me…on a boat!” She knows her gay men and they love her. She has also headlined for Dinah Shore, IML, and the LOGO Network. Watch for her grand finale when she impersonates people on the dance floor. These include “The couple that’s been together too long,” “a drag queen” and “the person whom you can tell would be good in bed!”

This event will also help to raise awareness and funds for the Matthew Sheppard Foundation of which Alec Mapa is an active Board Member. The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21 year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied education, outreach and advocacy programs.
