“August Wilson’s Jitney” at True Colors Theatre May 5-30; Alliance Theater June 5-27

Back in the ’70s, regular cabs didn’t travel to Pittsburgh’s urban Hill District. Jitney (set in 1977) follows the lives of men hustling to make a living as jitneys — unofficial, unlicensed cabbies. The gypsy station is in turmoil when the boss’ son returns after 20 years in prison; drama continues when the station faces possible demolition due to urban redevelopment. A slice of August Wilson’s life: the script, the stories, the way the characters interact with each other – it’s truly Wilson at his purist.

Directed by Derrick Sanders, Jitney will run from May 5 – 30 at True Colors Theatre at the Southwest Arts Center and from June 5 – 27 at Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center.

True Colors Hosts Q&A with Kenny Leon after Saturday Performance of Our Town in Atlanta

True Colors Theatre Company have added a Q&A session with their artistic director Kenny Leon after the Saturday, March 6 evening performance of Our Town at Southwest Arts Center. This is Leon’s last appearance in Atlanta before he heads to Broadway to direct Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in Fences. It also comes right after his being named named the recipient of the 2010 Julie Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing. Atlanta Daily World has the details:

According to the Drama League, Leon was the unanimous choice to receive this year’s honor. The Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing can be won only once in a lifetime and is given to an individual whose work over time sets new standards of directing excellence within American theater.

Read more from that article here. The Q&A will only be open to people who have tickets to that night’s show. Tickets are still on sale at Ticket Alternative.

Alecwhiteoutfitheadshot From the team that brings you Gay Day @ Great America, in association with the Producers of FRESH @ Ruby Skye, comes a new concert series – COMEDY AT THE CASTRO – kicking off on Saturday, September 13th, 2008 starring Alec Mapa & Shann Carr. Performing LIVE in San Francisco’s historic CASTRO THEATER, this unique comic duo will show you why they’re both superstars of Film, TV, stage, and the gay comedy circuit.

Hometown boy made good, actor, comedian, writer ALEC MAPA aka "America’s Gaysian Sweetheart" has a starring role on Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and the host of LOGO’s "TransAmerican Lovestory" Alec dishes the celebrity dish and tells you why love, marriage, sex and mother-in-laws are fodder for funny. Following the success of his latest big screen role in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Alec is one of the hottest comedians in the US today and is excited to be back on his home turf to play one of the most beautiful and historically significant gay venues in the country.

Shann Carr – Since 2000 Shann has been the sole lesbian entertainer on over 20 Atlantis cruises. “That’s right 2000 gay men… and me…on a boat!” She knows her gay men and they love her. She has also headlined for Dinah Shore, IML, and the LOGO Network. Watch for her grand finale when she impersonates people on the dance floor. These include “The couple that’s been together too long,” “a drag queen” and “the person whom you can tell would be good in bed!”

This event will also help to raise awareness and funds for the Matthew Sheppard Foundation of which Alec Mapa is an active Board Member. The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21 year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied education, outreach and advocacy programs.
