Live Review: Girl In A Coma at Maxine’s, July 14

Review and photos by Sarah Spencer

The electricity in the air was palpable in downtown Hot Springs, Ark. Not only had Maxine’s Pub added itself to the Ticket Alternative family earlier this summer, but it has also been attracting nationally- and internationally-known artists to the remodeled and historic venue in recent years. New owners Agnes Galecka and husband Kevin Rogers have really helped solidify the Spa City in the independent live music scene with their new, bigger, relocated stage, a top of the line sound system, quality stage lighting,  and not to mention, an always clean venue and friendly staff. … Continue Reading

Live Review & Picture Book: Unknown Hinson @ Juanita’s, May 7

Review and photos by Sarah Spencer.

The reigning King of Country Western Troubadours, Unknown Hinson, returned to Little Rock’s Juanita’s Friday May 7 with his explosive mix of alternative country-western metal and psychobilly sound. The opening band for the evening, The Crumbs, an Arkansas based band, is an enjoyable all-stringed quintet and a true traditional bluegrass band in that there is no drummer. Their version of The Talking Heads song “Psycho Killer” was a fun crowd-pleaser and was also their only cover song of the night. The rest of their nearly one hour performance included original tunes “What Does the Deep Sea Say?,” “Ole Slew Foot” and “How Mountain Girls,” in which each artist and their instrument were prominently featured in a successive order. Instruments used were a fiddle, banjo, upright bass, mandolin, Dobro guitar and washboard. All members of The Crumbs sang. … Continue Reading

Live Review & Picture Book: G. Love and Special Sauce @ Revolution Music Room, April 1

Article and photos by Sarah Spencer

On April 1, 2010, the day G. Love and Special Sauce hit Little Rock, I decided to make arrangements to catch the show and, boy, am I glad I did! Although I was flying solo (some of my friends can’t be as spontaneous as yours truly) the nearly 500 strong at the Rev Room made my imaginations of a lonely night disappear. It was one, big, diverse, group of fans at a groove thumping, intimate jam session. … Continue Reading

Live Review: Paul Thorn @ Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, Ark., January 27

By Sarah Spencer

I must admit, I may be a little biased when it comes to reviewing this concert. Blues, alternative country singer/songwriter and folk artist Paul Thorn has the ability of putting voodoo love spells on women, both young and old, and I have fallen victim to his charms. With that being said, the concert was the best I’ve ever been to in my entire life and I am determined to see him again as soon as possible. Texas in July, here I come! Excuse me, I digress.

The mild January night began at Little Rock’s The Revolution Music Room with me meeting up with a girlfriend of mine whom I hadn’t seen in over three years. A Paul Thorn concert would be perfect to mark the auspicious occasion. She had never heard of him before, which was not surprising – most haven’t, but I had seen him in concert once prior and I knew it would be an unforgettable show. I call him a blues/alt-country artist but it’s hard to describe Paul Thorn’s music accurately. Known for his sometimes amusing, always entertaining stories woven between and throughout songs, his music has elements of many genres including rock, soul, funk, gospel and R&B.

For an artist you’ve probably never heard of, he has had a long successful career working with musical giants like Sting, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine and Huey Lewis just to name a few. Many artists, such as Tanya Tucker, Toby Keith and Sawyer Brown, have covered his songs. But, no one sounds like Paul. He has one distinctive set of vocal chords while his Mississippian accent oozes masculine sexuality and roughness. He makes me want to hang from his lips. But he don’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk. When he came out to the stage, Mandy asked me, “Why didn’t you tell me he was so hot?” However, his enticing good looks and alluring voice are only part of his appeal. A gifted songwriter and rhythm guitarist, he is backed up by an exceptionally talented band consisting of Billy Maddox, songwriter/producer, Bill Hinds on acoustic, electric and slide guitars as well as background vocals, Doug Kahan on bass guitar and background vocals, Michael Graham, aka Dr. Love, on keys and last, but certainly not least, Jeffery Perkins on drums. … Continue Reading

Live Review: Silversun Pickups, Manchester Orchestra, Cage the Elephant @ Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, September 25

 SilvesunsLive1
By Sarah Spencer
It was still over an hour till showtime, however, on September 25, 2009,
The Revolution Music Room was already crowded with anxious indie rock music
lovers. Although the headlining band, Silversun Pickups, drew the majority of
fans, the popularity of Cage the Elephant and Manchester Orchestra was evident
in numbers. The Rev Room and Ticket Alternative promoted this concert as a
triple-header, and rightly so, for this sold-out event.

Live Review: Days of the New @ Juanita’s in Little Rock, July 10

DaysoftheNew1

By Sarah Spencer

Last Friday Days of the New performed at Juanita's in downtown
Little Rock to a large audience of relaxed but anxious music fans. Days of
the New first received commercial success with then-17-year-old Travis
Meeks leading the way for their post-grunge and self-titled debut album from
1997 with hit tracks such as "Touch, Peel and Stand," "Shelf in the Room" and
"The Down Town."

But, before I go into their performance that night, I would
like to first comment on the opening performing bands. The first band, Eden
Crow, began the late show. This local band's high-energy
enthusiasm was genuine, though possibly a little too theatrical. Lead
singer, founder and air guitarist, simply known as "The Cowboy," enjoyed
conversing with the crowd, but he also enjoyed leg lunges, squats and tossing
his curly long hair with exaggeration.

Live Review: The Veronicas @ The Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, AR

Veronicas

By Sarah Spencer

The opening band for The Veronicas Little Rock show  was a band called The Love
Willows
. Honestly, I missed half this set because it started at 8.30 p.m. when the
website for the venue (The Rev Room in Little Rock, AR) stated that the concert
would start at 9:00 pm. We arrived at around 8.45 p.m. The lead singer was a
pretty blonde all dolled up … seriously, all dolled up. She had on what looked
to be a short pink poofy prom dress and perfect sweet curls in her hair with a
pretty sweet voice to match. Her partner on guitar was a little more casual. The
Love Willows consists of Hope Partlow on vocals and instrumentalists Ryan Wilson
on guitar. If you like bubblegum pop with a mix of rockabilly and enthusiastic
vocals you should listen to The Love Willows. They sang "Wait", a poignant song
asking "When are you coming home?" along with their song "Strut My Stuff" a
quirky little ditty in which Partlow did indeed strut her stuff. They finished
their set with their most popular song "Falling Faster" a mid-tempo love
story.

Live Review: Player/Kommander at Vinyl, May 1

PlayerKommander

By Stephanie Roman

Player/Kommander describe themselves as "a splash of New York glam with motor oil under their nails." Equally at home playing L.A.'s Viper Room or a juke joint on the Mississippi delta, PK brought their unique style of glitterbilly rock home to Atlanta on Friday night. The band did not let the venue's small crowd prevent them from launching into an arena-rock worthy performance of their diverse music and showmanship. Frankly, I expected no less from James Hall (former frontman of Mary My Hope and Pleasure Club), but this was my first glimpse of a live show from the quintet.

Live Review: David Cook @ The Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, AR, April 29

DavidCookLive
Review and photos by Sarah Spencer

It may be surprising to some that David Cook is still playing small venues, as
well as college and university campuses. As the reigning American Idol, I
expected to see him selling out arenas. Although, on April 29, The
Revolution Music Room was a sold out packed house that sounded just about as
loud as any rock concert in any arena that I've been to.
