150 Indie Labels Devastated By London Riots In Sony PIAS Warehouse Fire

“A Sony Music warehouse in north London, which also served as the distribution center for many independent labels, has been destroyed in a fire during the riots spreading through the UK capital. The warehouse contained the stock of more than 150 large and small record labels distributed by PIAS, the UK’s largest wholesaler of independent music. PIAS issued this statement:

“There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for PIAS in the UK and Ireland. PIAS is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. PIAS’s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected. More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.”

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) representing most of the indie labels including many run by artists who lost all of their stock in the fire issued the following statement:

To all music fans:

You may have heard that the London riots have caused the destruction of a warehouse in North London housing many of the UK’s independent labels and artists. All the stock has been destroyed by fire. This will lead to much hardship for the artists and labels affected.
What music fans can do to show their support for the indie label community, and help them survive this disaster is to buy a digital download of an album from any one of the digital retailers in the UK, as well as going to their local record store while stocks last.

This way, the labels will be able to remanufacture their CD’s and vinyl more quickly, to resupply the record shops who are also affected by the riots.

Alison Wenham, Chairman and CEO of AIM, the UK’s Trade Association for the Independent Music Industry: “This is a disaster for the music community, but with the fans’ help, labels and artists will survive. Please show your support for the music community by buying a digital album from an independent label today”.

Is A Record Deal Still Important To A Musician’s Future?

Is A Record Deal Still Important To A Musician’s Future?

By Eileen Tilson

Back in the heyday of the “Big Booming Music Industry,” little musician-wannabees would pray to the guitar gods at night hoping that one day, the big man in the suit would present them one with the Holy Grail, aka, The Record Deal. In the world of music, this was like finding the golden ticket taking you straight into the Chocolate Factory. Alas, as we all are aware, nothing lasts forever and the steady decline of physical product left the labels scrambling for ways to make money. For those of you who still believe in signing here is a little business definition for you:

“The label’s interest in you is contingent upon how your band performs as a financial instrument. An advance is essentially the label loaning you money for a set period of time with the expectation that you’ll be able to repay the loan plus interest, thus making the label a Return On Investment (ROI).”

Going back to the current scene, we have all seen how labels have had a steady decrease in revenue these past few years; however this might be about to change. Warner Music Group announced today that their reported narrowing losses were only $46 million for the fiscal third quarter, compared to a $55 million loss a year ago. Why the change you ask? CEO Edgar Bronfman confirmed that  50% of revenue came from “areas of the business that did not exist in 2004″. 60% of currently signed WMG artists are signed to 360 or expanded rights deals.

Just in case you ever wanted to see a real record contract, the folks from Breaking Benjamin (the band just broke up) have so kindly released all the paperwork. The entire court filing is available thanks to TunelabThe actual record contract starts on page 25 here. It takes a minute to download, but totally worth it.

Is Social Media Really Making You Fans?

July 27, 2011 Music News Comments Off

By Eileen Tilson

There was a fascinating article in Hypebot today, that really nailed the reason why social media can actually be hurting your ability to get fans. Over the past week, Google+ has been all the rage, being called the “Facebook-killer” and even a “Twitter replacement,” but is it really? And now the music marketing blogs and articles are flowing, and again everyone is scrambling  to discover a new cool way to turn the spotlight on themselves. However, with all the noise, I can’t help but to wonder, are you hurting yourself and you band’s chance of actually getting real fan love? Every single day, my email gets flooded with press releases from folks who could not even pick me out of a police lineup asking for coverage, and yet about 50% of the time, they are not even playing in Atlanta. Doesn’t this seem a little squirrelly?

Social media is an amazing tool to use for engaging with fans, but if everyday you are plugging your shows, asking a fan to do something for you, etc., don’t you think that seems a bit excessive? Here’s some of the article:

Using Google+ as a marketing tool is EXACTLY THE SAME as using Facebook or Twitter; while they might be small differences with the interface or how to specifically do something, the actual value in using them only comes from exactly how you use it. Do you post interesting an engaging content? Do you thank fans and respond to them? Do you make being a fan or follower a rewarding experience? Awesome, you’re doing the right things.

The problem is, most musicians are not doing this. Nope, they sign up for each and every new thing thinking that JUST BECAUSE it’s the new thing, thinking it’s going to help them. So they post songs, spam friends with events, do the whole “wave my hands in the air look at me,” and then sit on the porch and pout because they don’t have any new “fans”.

Win A Pair of Tickets to See Tech N9ne at Jannus Live on July 30!

If you’re a fan of hip-hop, then you’ll have heard about this awesome piece of news. The Boombox reports:

Tech N9ne‘s 12th studio record, ‘All 6′s and 7′s’ debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the Rap Albums chart, after moving 55,806 units. His last effort, 2010′s ‘The Gates Mixed Plate,’ released roughly a year ago, sold only around 50,000 copies total…

Assists on the album were a departure from Tech’s usual underground roots, with more mainstream artists — Yelawolf, Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, B.o.B., E-40, Snoop Dogg, the Deftones and Lil Wayne — contributing to the new effort. But Tech’s lyrics on the album cut ‘Love Me Tomorrow’ suggest otherwise: “Tech will never go mainstream/ Mainstream will go Tech.”

Which makes for a pretty celebratory tour. The rapper is trekking around the country, and will be stopping at St. Petersburg’s Jannus Live on July 30. We have five pairs of tickets to give away. All you have to do is enter using the form below.

13th Floor Elevator’s Roky Erickson Returns for a Show at Black Cat on November 5

13th Floor Elevator’s Roky Erickson Returns for a Show at Black Cat on November 5

Austin, Texas’ 13th Floor Elevators broke boundaries in the late 1960s, with Roky Erickson leading the way in a psychedelic revolution. The band was short-lived, breaking up before the ’60s were even over, but the influence of 13th Floor Elevators reverberated with bands for decades afterward, from Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and the Holding Company to Primal Scream.

Before the band even finished, Roky Erickson was already struggling with hints of mental illness. In the following years, Erickson’s state declined, though interest in his music during the ’80s and ’90s increased. Finally, in 2001, Erickson’s younger brother was granted custody of Roky, and together they got Roky out of the myriad of problems – both mental and legal – that had been plaguing Roky for decades.

What followed was a slew of activity, from playing at the Austin City Music Limits Festival, Coachella Festival, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Austin Music Awards, South By Southwest and more. He also released a record, True Love Cast Out All Evil, in April of this year, which was recorded with Okkervil River.

And now Roky Erickson is back on tour, and will be stopping in Washington, D.C. for a show at Black Cat on November 5.
