Check Out: Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek)’s Video for “Midnight Hour,” Feat Estelle; Playing Black Cat in D.C., June 10 & The Loft, June 14

The duo of Reflection Eternal sure put out some great vibes. Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek have teamed together again and they’ve brought in sassy British soulstress Estelle to lend some smooth vocals to their track “Midnight Hour.” And we love the result. It’s got that old school feel that the likes of Amy Winehouse have been making a must, with plenty of brass and ’60s dance moves. Not to mention the slick threads. Love it. … Continue Reading

Cheap Trick at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, June 5

We can’t think of a more covered or more popular karaoke song than Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me.”

With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 gold and platinum recording awards – it’s clear – the band is serious about putting on a Rock ‘n’ Roll show.

Leila’s Three Picks: The Buzzcocks, Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, The B-52s

Leila’s Three Picks: The Buzzcocks, Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, The B-52s

We’ve got some classics and some sprightly new stuff for ya this week!

Seminal punk band The Buzzcocks will be playing through their first two albums “Another Music In A Different Kitchen” and “Love Bites” at Black Cat in Washington, D.C. on May 11.

2009 Flaming Lips & Stardeath and White Dwarfs – Borderline from George Salisbury on Vimeo.

Stardeath and the White Dwarfs are joined to Flaming Lips by blood (Wayne Coyne being the singer’s uncle), the road (the Dwarfs are opening for the Lips on tour) and by music (they’ve collaborated a fair bit). Here’s a lovely example of the latter, the two bands covering Madonna’s “Borderline.” It starts off rather mellow and sparse but about halfway through breaks out into true Flaming Lips (and Stardeath) style and builds tremendously from there. Stardeath and the White Dwarfs play The EARL in Atlanta with All The Saints on May 12.

There’s nothing like a classic bit of new wave on a Friday. This time it’s courtesy of The B-52s, with “Rock Lobster.” They play the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater on July 24.

They’re getting back on the road and will be playing a gig at Revolution Music Room on May 10, which is sure to be packed so get your tickets now! And while you’re at it, check out their new video for the rollicking “In One Ear.”

The Buzzcocks Coming to Black Cat May 11 to Play First Two Albums!

We’re very excited to announce that seminal punk band The Buzzcocks are making a trip stateside – and they’ll be making a stop at Washington, D.C.’s Black Cat. The Bolton-born group played a huge part in the late ’70s punk scene in Manchester, England, and were at the forefront of the DIY movement that blossomed at the same time. They will be playing the entirety of their first two records at the gig on May 11, and tickets are on sale now!

OK Go – WTF? from OK Go on Vimeo.

OK Go certainly know how to work that video camera. And they sure know how to get their fans’ attention. They launched a video remix project at the beginning of the year for their single “WTF,” which you may have started to hear on the ads for “Bones” and “Fringe.” It’s a lovely way to waste a couple of minutes at work – just watching the original trippy video or the rest of the crazy remixes – or indeed a lot longer if you’re willing to submit you’re own masterpiece. Be warned – there is (naturally) a couple of bad words at the beginning!

OK Go play The Loft in Atlanta May 13. Tickets are on sale now!

Film Screening: The Life of the World to Come, A Mountain Goats Documentary @ The Black Cat, April 3

Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) directs as The Mountain Goats‘ John Darnielle performs The Life of the World to Come, on piano and guitar. Shot in the same building where Darnielle performed Bach minuets for the state examiner when he was an eight-year-old, the film takes the songs from the album and restores them to their original form – skin, blood and bone.

The Life of the World to Come will be screening at venues around the U.S. For dates and locations please visit – www.mountain-goats.com
