5GB With Mewithoutyou; Playing Black Cat, May 17th

5GB With Mewithoutyou; Playing Black Cat, May 17th

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

That’s a tricky question, technically it was the New Kids On The Block but I wouldn’t necessarily call that a gig. The first real concert I went to where I felt that it had some kind of impact on my life was Lollapalooza 94. Among many many many great artists, I got to see the Pumpkins, the Beastie Boys, the Breeders, Boredoms, Flaming Lips, Tribe. It was a really special event being that I was in the seventh grade. My father took me and a friend to some open field in the rain to lurch around the mud and watch generation X first hand. Throughout the day, he would do a pronounced sniff directed at Tim and I saying “smell that (sniff sniff), that’s marijuana”. Had he never told me, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. Prior to this concert, I was not aware that bands cursed at their audience over the microphone in between songs, Billy Corgan’s gratuitous use of the F word though exciting, left me slightly uncomfortable.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

One show that comes to mind as sort of career defining moment was our record release show for It’s All Crazy. I think it was three years ago to this May. For one, we sold out the Trocadero. I’ve seen every one of my favorite bands at the Troc at some point in my life. It was a childhood dream to be up on that stage playing to a packed house. Two, the crowd was explosive, we’ve never received so much enthusiastic emotion. Three, the band was just on in a way that we never were before. Everything was clicking right as we rolled through the set. And lastly, a good amount of friends and family were on hand to enjoy the experience with us. It had all the makings of a top notch show and lived beyond all of our expected fantasy to just not have the place looking empty.

Philadelphia rockers, Mewithoutyou, have be making music for over a decade, and got an assist from Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams on their standout new album, in Bigger Than the Sound. They’re at Black Cat tonight, and they chatted with us before the show.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

This is another freak question because of the volume of shows I have attended. Man, picking one, it’s almost impossible! If I have to, it would probably be Feist at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, sometime in 2010. The venue was gorgeous, the sound was perfect, the show was unpredictable, and she alone was enthralling. I got every ounce of worth out of that night. It was one of those shows that make you question your own musical abilities inspiring you to step up your game. The whole package was perfect. Aside from that particular show, some other notables are Animal Collective in LA 2007, Interpol/Blonde Red head at the Electric Factory 2005, Radiohead in Toronto 2000 & Weezer at the Tower sometime in 1995.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Dream line up? I would be wholly satisfied to the grave if we could get a slot on a singular Fugazi show. I am not sure that they are even broken up but if they ever play shows again, that’s it. Playing for a half hour before them once would please us greatly. I can’t think of any other bands that I would want to share a stage with more. Playing drums for a two living member reunion of Nirvana is another fantasy of mine, of course Krist Novoselic doing the bass and Dave Grohl playing Kurt. I’d like to think that I can hang.

5GB With JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound; Playing Black Cat, Tonight May 16th

According to Paste Magazine, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound  ”describe themselves as a post-punk soul band, but their sound is so much more expansive than that. Uptown Sound is on par with soul musicians from the heyday of the genre’s popularity.”  They are in D.C. tonight playing at the Black Cat, and joined us for our 5GB series before the show.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Night Ranger & Starship @ DC Convention Center. Starship opened with “We Built This City”, reprised it later in the set, and then included in the encore. Give the people what they want ;)

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

The last one. Hometown show @ Metro, 1000 screaming, clapping, dancing fans.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

The Make-Up @ a loft party in Boston. Ian Svenonius spent more than half the show being supported by the hands of the first few rows of the crowd.

Gig you would most like to play?

Saturday Night Live, or Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon, with the Roots sitting in.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Fugazi, Raphael Saadiq, White Stripes, Public Image Ltd (original line-up w/ Jah Wobble on bass)

5GB With Redline Graffiti; Playing Black Cat Sunday, May 13th

5GB With Redline Graffiti; Playing Black Cat Sunday, May 13th

D.C. locals, Redlne Graffiti are an electronica/indie four-piece Redline Graffiti who have been around for less than a year, but are already picking up steam in the blogosphere. The band released their four-track EP, About and Because, last December, and their first full length record, The Drill, drops in June.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Drew: It’s funny, I love live music to death now, but I didn’t start going to concerts until my middle teens. That seems late to me. I’m sure it is. Anyway, the first show I went to see was Norah Jones’. It was in Milwaukee, where I’m from. I was 15 or 16. Norah has wrists that are very long. ‘Come Away With Me’ had just come out, and I listened to it on a portable CD player…Wow, a portable CD player. I’ll never forget it.

Donald: I was 7 or 8 years old, and Craig Mack was performing in DC for this short lived event called the FutureFest. I knew a couple songs, but “Flava In Ya Ear” was big, we all waited for that track.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Drew: So far, opening for Class Actress has been the show I liked the best. It was the most apathetic crowd I’d ever played in front of. I learned what it was like to have to play in spite of not being well received, and what it’s like to win a crowd over. Class Actress has some songs that I really like, too. So, it was cool meeting them. They don’t talk much (laughs). Anyway, that and this show we just did in Brooklyn.

Donald: I second Brooklyn (thank you, ‘Free Candy’), that and the Black Cat show we had in February.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Drew: So far, it’s been Nas at the Roots picnic of ’11. I overslept and had to take a later bus to Philly, and I hadn’t bought a ticket. So, I get there and, as I’m banking on, there are scalpers at the front gates. Pay a guy 100 bucks for one because who cares. I’m there, in the same (excellent) spot I had claimed for my self from noon until 11, when he came on. Wiz Khalifa came on right before, and all these white kids under 21 flooded the area around me. So, I got smoked out and was way toasted when Nas took the stage. The kids who smoked me out vanished in an instant. All the same, as they would have harshed my buzz. Nas backed by the fuckin’ Roots! Magic.

Donald: NYC, Central Park, 2009. It was the Summer Stage event and Little Dragon opened for Q-Tip. Little Dragon held a great groove, and Q-Tip’s live setup and performance was awesome, DJ Scratch was on the back line too.

Gig you would most like to play?

Drew: The White House. I’d like to get off some racially charged and socially aware banter in between songs. Maybe get kicked out (laughs).

Donald: If not Bonnaroo, Then overseas, like Pukkelpop, or Reading Festival.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Drew: TV on the Radio, Biggie Smalls, Redline Graffiti.

Donald: Oh man… J Davey, Ebony Bones, The Noisettes, LCD Soundsystem, A Tribe Called Quest, Redline Graffiti

5GB With Gentleman Jesse & His Men; Playing Black Cat, May 12th

Gentleman Jesse & His Men, are an Atlanta combo that revels in the bright, energetic power pop sounds of the early New Wave era. Much like the late and great Exploding Hearts, they inject lo-fi garage with a direct shot of rock’n'roll ecstasy. In other words, it’s a good time. Always the clever one, Jesse joined us for our 5GB series before their show on Saturday at Black Cat.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

The Ramones and Frank Black. It was the day that they announced that Kurt Cobain was dead. My girlfriend called me and said “did you hear?” and I said “who cares I’m going to see the Ramones!”

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

We have been pretty lucky to have played lots of good shows with lots of good bands. Performance wise I have no idea. Anytime I hear a live set from us all I can think is my voice sucks.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I’ve been to a lot of shows and have no interest in rating them. Some memorable bands that I have seen? Off the top of my head: Dead Moon, OBN III’s, Mission of Burma, GBH, Cola Freaks, Milk n Cookies, Oblivians, Paul Collins, Roky Erickson, Mika Miko, I could go on for hours.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d like to play with Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Wouldn’t you, Eileen? What do you call a girl with one leg?

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Stop saying the word gig!

5GB With We Were Promised Jetpacks; Playing Black Cat, May 2

5GB With We Were Promised Jetpacks; Playing Black Cat, May 2

Like fellow Scotsmen Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks are adept at combining the soaring emotions of a U2 anthem with the frenetic energy of post-punk. The result is a new brand of kilt-clad emo. Scotland has done it again. They joined us for our 5GB series before their show on Wednesday at the Black Cat.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

A band called Mull Historical Society played in Edinburgh and my mum wanted to go so I took her for her birthday. I was pretty old, probably too old for a first show to be honest. Their/his album Loss had just come out, which is great, so it would’ve been about 2001, so I reckon I was 13 or 14 years old.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

That’s a toughie, but maybe Music Hall of Williamsburg a couple of years ago.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Explosions in the Sky played the Picture House in Edinburgh a few months ago and it was incredible.

Gig you would most like to play?

Sean wants to launch his stand-up career soon, so I reckon a comedy show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Explosions in the Sky, Childish Gambino, Patton Oswalt and Bear Hands. (not us)

5GB With The Boxer Rebellion; Playing Black Cat Tuesday April 24

5GB With The Boxer Rebellion; Playing Black Cat Tuesday April 24

London-based quartet, The Boxer Rebellion, have reached their 10,000 hours. For over a decade the band remained the underdog in the U.K. underground indie rock scene, despite their multiple television and movie placements. After a brief cancellation of their North American tour, the band is back in D.C. and joined us for our 5GB series before their show tomorrow at Black Cat.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Foo Fighter’s record release for “Colour and the Shape” at Congressional Plaza on Rockville Pike. Dave had a shiny green Grestch he just got, and I shook Pat Smear’s hand. Danny high-fived Taylor Hawkins, and we went home infected with an even deeper desire to be real musicians.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Staying with the theme, Midnight Spin’s record release for “Through the Mojo Wire” pops into my head every time I’m asked this. It was our fans, our friends, and our first show with Jeremy. I remember after we finished the first song I was a little frightened at how loud the applause was inside Mercury Lounge, a really great feeling. Here’s to hoping the upcoming record release can top it.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I couldn’t really ask for anything better than having my 2nd favorite band open up for my favorite band. Seeing Pearl Jam open up for the Rolling Stones in Pittsburgh in beautiful October weather was about as good as it gets. I almost fell over the outfield bleacher railing when they started playing “Get Off of My Cloud”, there was a lot of jumping around on my part. Eddie Vedder came out to sang Wild Horses with the Stones. I drove up from DC with my Dad to see the show, it was a great memory.

Gig you would most like to play?

Something about the Reading Festival tells me that we’d have a great time there.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The radio DJ would probably say something like, “A third band has been added to Friday night’s bill at Madison Square Garden, where Midnight Spin will now be joining The Strokes and headliner Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.”

Catch Midnight Spin, April 20th at The Red Palace, Washington D.C.

CD Review: Say Anything — Anarchy, My Dear; Playing Black Cat, April 17

Say Anything
Anarchy, My Dear
Equal Vision Records

By Al Kaufman

First things first, these guys are nothing like the John Cusack movie. They are not going to play Peter Gabriel through their boom boxes up to their girlfriend’s window. No, their love songs have more of a Sid and Nancy feel to them. On the cut, “Say Anything,” Maxim Bemis spits out tortures he would go through for his girl: “I’d throw up every morning, pull my nails out, take a wrench to all my teeth.” Damned if that doesn’t make a girl feel special. … Continue Reading
