5GB With P.G. Six; Playing DC9, Thursday May 10th

P.G. Six is one of the monikers used by Patrick Gubler, a New York singer/guitar player whose debut solo album, Parlor Tricks and Porch Favorites, was released in 2001 by the Amish label to much critical acclaim. His music fuses an unlikely range of influences including 60s British folk, country rock, & experimental music. P.G. Six has shared the stage with a variety of performers including: Ghost, Slint, Yo la tengo, Michael Hurley, & The Incredible String Band.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

My first rock concert was when one of my older brothers took me to see a Christian band called the 2nd Chapter of Acts at the Palace Theater in Albany. It would’ve been the late 1970′s. I was a little bummed because this one guy Phil Keaggy wasn’t playing with them anymore (he was this really virtuosic guitarist–was in a band called Glass Harp)

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

I think the best one in a way was a solo show I played at Tonic in 2000. It was really the first time I felt even close to feeling comfortable on stage by myself, and able to get through a performance. Since then there’s been peaks and valleys, but that felt like the first time it jelled.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Probably this one Robin Williamson concert–it was a house concert in Hilldale, NY. Would’ve been the late eighties or early nineties.

Gig you would most like to play?

Oh jeez…Carnegie Hall I guess.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Willie Nelson, Richard Thompson. I actually had a dream once that Willie Nelson covered “Night Comes In”. It sounded great in the dream. So, I’d like to see that–with Richard Thompson playing electric guitar.
Heck, if it’s a dream, I’d love to be part of the backing band–maybe play a couple of chords on a wurlitzer electric piano.

5GB With Gentleman Hall; Playing DC9, Wednesday, April 4th

Boston synth-rockers, Gentlemen Hall are not slaves to the keyboard…all members are Berklee College of Music graduates, and play multiple instruments. In 2009 MTV awarded them the Video Music Award (VMA) for “Best Breakout Boston Artist.” In 2010 the Boston Phoenix named them “Best New Local Act.” Gentlemen Hall has shared the stage with the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Nicki Minaj, One Republic, Britney Spears, Lil’ Wayne, Rihanna, Swizz Beatz, LMFAO, Beyonce, Ke$ha, Cee-Lo Green,  Taking Back Sunday, and All Time Low. They joined us before their show tomorrow night at DC9.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Cobi – MC Hammer
Brad – Phish
Seth – DMB
Ro – Moody Blues
Gavin – Weird Al
Phil – something in kindergarten

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

Everywhere we’ve gone has been a really good time but it seems like no matter where it is, house parties are almost always the best.  There are no age limits, rules, agitated bouncers, hang-ups about what is acceptable behavior.  Just a ton of people enjoying a great experience together.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

Wow, that’s a toughie.  As a collective group, probably Muse last year.  Talk about top-notch musicians, light show and stage presence.

Gig you would most like to play?

Anywhere the vibe and the acts are great.  Outdoor shows are always fun.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

We’d be opening for The Beatles, and it would be in outer space.

Catch Gentleman Hall tomorrow at  DC9, D.C..

5GB With Pomegranates; Playing DC9 Tomorrow, April 3rd

Cincinnati may not be known for having the greatest rock scene, but it does ok…As is seen with indie rockers, Pomegranates, who although are only a couple of years old, are gaining some steady heat.  The band caught the ear of music aficionados and taste makers across the country with the likes of KEXPWOXY, and numerous other independent and college stations nation-wide that fell for the bands’ quirky pop stylings, helping Pomegranates reach #20 most added for their first week on CMJ‘s charts. The blog circuit jumped on board as well, allowing Pomegranates to charm their way to #11 on Elbo.ws blog aggregate.  Artists such as French Kicksand Islands took notice of Pomegranates’ dynamic live set, inviting them out on the road, a place this burgeoning band has found a fast home. They joined us for our 5GB series before their show tomorrow at DC9.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first one I remember wasnt so much a gig as a ‘concert’ at a church. Phil Keaggy who is a pretty legendary guitar player, and Michael Card, a singer songwriter type who used lots of hammer dulcimer. I remember having my mind blown when Phil Keaggy started looping stuff. I dont think I evenknew guitar effects existed at the time. Haha.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

Best gig we played… hm. Monolith Festival in Red Rocks a few years ago was a fun experience. Our last show at Southgate House here in Kentucky was a really fun and uplifting moment as far as our actual performance goes. We ended up crowd surfing as a band for a moment for some photos and took the photo for the album art for Heaven.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

I remember being blown away by Mew several years ago. We toured with some great bands such as Aloha, Figurines, and French Kicks who all had some great nights.

Gig you would most like to play?

Just to experience it, opening an arena show for a band like Coldplay or U2 would be incredible.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The Firebird in St. Louis with Wye Oak, French Kicks, Spoon, The War on Drugs, Coldplay, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Eels, Foster the People, Neil Young, Young the Giant, The Rapture, and Spiritualized.

Catch Pomegranates tomorrow at  DC9, D.C..

5GB With Black Box Revelation; Playing DC9, Washington D.C., March 8

garage punk rock. Doesn’t the description alone sound awesome. We chatted with them before their show at Washington D.C.’s DC9.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Jan:My first great music experience was the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium. Loads of bands on 8 different stages and on one of those stages, the Marquee, I saw the New Zealand band ‘The Datsuns’ playing. That gig is still one of my favorites, it just blew me away and made me start playing the guitar.
Dries: The first gig I went to was also at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium. The headliner that day was Limp Bizkit. Their show was great. loud and tight! Also Sum 41 was playing that day, but I was a bigger fan back then:).

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

Jan: That’s probably on that same festival but in a different tent. We played the Pukkelpop festival 4 or 5 times already, and it always is a highlight in our touring schedule. In 2009 we played in the Club which is a relatively small stage on the festival. We knew it would be way too small, but chose to play there anyway, and that’s why the crowd was so extremely excited. 2000 people inside, sweating as hell, and probably another 3 or 4000 people outside trying to get closer to the stage or enjoying the show from outside on the big screens. Amazing gig.
Dries: Rock en Seine a festival in france two years ago. It was our first big festival in France and that show was just amazing! So many people were there, all dancing and having fun. And when the crowd likes it, we’re giving them as much energy as we have!

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

Jan: The Kills at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. They came to Brussels twice that year. I don’t remember the exact year but it was when they were just about to release their No Wow records. They played a try out show at the Club, which only holds about 200 people. Great show but super short, they only played for about 40 minutes on that show. A couple of months later they hit the main hall for 2000 people and that show was extraordinary! I love the inner aggression in their music, and the way they bring that on stage. Yelling at each other like they’re in a big fight, haha, I love it.

Dries: The White Stripes in Brussels. I always been a big fan of Jack White. The way he came on stage on that show was pretty cool. Taking polaroid pictures of his piano and the stage and throwing them into the crowd, good idea! The way they are playing together is so natural, no setlist. That’s how it should be!

Gig you would most like to play?

Jan: Probably one of the big festivals like Coachella or Lollapalooza yes. We played Bonnaroo last year and that was so much fun. Can’t wait to hit another festival like that!
Dries: Oh yes, Bonnarroo was a lot of fun! It would be amazing to play there again in the evening on a major stage!
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Jan: I would get us on the bill at the 9.30 in Washington, DC. We played there with Beady Eye in December of 2011 and that audience was one of my favorites. Together with us on the bill, uhmm, there’s just too much choice. Let’s say Kasabian, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Kills and the Rolling Stones when they were in their twenties. Haha!
Dries: That would be us as headliner;), The Dead Weather, Neil Young, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Black Mountain. The Wiltern In Los Angeles would be the perfect venue!
