5GB With Electric Guest; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel Saturday May 4th

England’s Electric Guest have been racing up the charts with their infectious doo-woppy song “ThisHead I Hold,” making more hips sway than the days of Elvis. Their latest album Mondo is reminiscent of the good ole’ days where all you wanted to do is get sweaty and dance all night. They are playing the Rock and Roll Hotel on Saturday and they joined us for our 5GB series before their show:

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I went to see The Grateful Dead with my brother and my parents outside of San Francisco. We sat on a blanket a million miles from the stage and my parents let me walk around by myself which was cool. This was before big concerts had giant screens to watch if you were far away, which was nice because you could listen a bit more and hang out with your neighbors. I don’t remember the music that much but my mom and dad seemed to be into it.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Last night we were in Denver playing a show and met this guy named Bruce who told us that the show was going to be a “historic event”. He was in his 60s and was smoking so much weed with his friend that by the time we were half way through, he was on a different planet. But he was so into it. It was great. People kept passing me drinks on stage and when we finished we got a lot of gifts from fans, which was awesome.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I would want to play at The Greek Theater in Berkeley, California because it’s where I grew up. I also want to play in Virginia, where Matt grew up.

Gig you would most like to play?

I would have liked to play Woodstock. I asked my dad about it because he went with three of his high school friends and said it changed his life.

What is the gig you would have loved to have seen?

I would want to go to Slug’s in 1972 to see Lee Morgan play. He was always my favorite trumpeter growing up and if I could travel back in time than I could possibly avert his death. He was shot onstage that night by his wife..

5GB With Ugly Purple Sweater; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel, May 3rd

5GB With Ugly Purple Sweater; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel, May 3rd

Ugly Purple Sweater, have been charming the D.C. music scene with their swirling guitars and equally massive voices. They make melody-driven rock and roll that’s a few degrees of quirkiness away from being Muse or a Snow Patrol sounds like it’s shooting for the stars. They joined us for our 5GB series before their show at the Rock and Roll Hotel.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I went to a lot of classical recitals and concerts when I was quite little, mostly ones in which I or my mom was performing, but the first rock concert I ever attended was HFStival, the annual summer festival put on by WHFS, the Baltimore alternative station. (One day in 2004, with no advance notice, HFS signed off and was replaced by El Sol, a Spanish-language station with a latin pop format, and so ended one of the primary pop-music institutions of my youth.) HFS that year featured such storied Eddie Vedder impersonators as Live, Silverchair, and the Offspring. In retrospect, the whole thing seems terrifying: I was a scrawny 13 year old amidst 20,000 drunk antagonistic people on the field of the Baltimore Raven’s stadium. It was like the wildebeest stampede scene from the Lion King, except less friendly, and louder.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

For me, the best shows to play are sometimes the strange ones. The strangest one UPS ever played was at a house party in new york. There was a band playing with us called Fables that totally mindfucked me. They demanded attention — literally demanded it — by confronting people in the audience that weren’t paying enough attention. They told one guy, “If you listen, you might learn something.” It was awesome how uncomfortable it was.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I saw Deerhoof play in a loft in Chicago in 2004. It was a show that propelled me into what I expect will be lifelong Deerhoof fandom, but my most vivid memory of it was that I was visiting my then-girlfriend in Chicago, and she absolutely hated their set. She had worked all day and the show started late, and she spent Deerhoof’s set swaying back and forth, trying to stay awake, and occasionally saying how much she wanted to leave.

Anyway, Deerhoof is incredible. Their drummer, Greg Saunier is extraordinarily dynamic. In whole sections of their set, he plays the bare minimum necessary to suggest the idea of a groove without playing a proper backbeat. And then he enters with these dramatic, nearly arhythmic drum fills. It’s breathtaking. And also, their guitarists have discovered what may very well be the world’s greatest guitar tone: it’s noisy and clanky and full of overtones, and yet also somehow perfectly clear, which allows them to play genuinely dissonant stuff without it disintegrating into an opaque, staticky haze.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d love to play Austin City Limits; having a beautifully crafted document of the performance is a big draw.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The P-Funk All Stars would open, followed by Rhythm of the Saints-era Paul Simon, and then we’d play, and Paul Simon’s army of percussionists would join us for our 35 minute encore. (No harm in dreaming big, I figure.)

5GB With Left On Vermont; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel Tonight, April 27

April 27, 2012 Events, Interviews No Comments
5GB With Left On Vermont; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel Tonight, April 27

Left On Vermont is a Washington, DC-based band that plays music described as “rock-art with a singer-songwriter’s soul.” Call it indie-pop. Call it alt-folk rock. They are playing the Rock and Roll Hotel tonight, and they joined us for our 5GB series before their show.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Between the five of us, we came up with some pretty interesting answers. We’re not even sure what technically counts as a “gig” (would a rockin’ oboe recital count?), but it seems Erin wins the prize here: New Kids on the Block, 5 years old. Thank you.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Probably last year’s CD release show at the very same venue, Rock n Roll Hotel. There was a real sense of accomplishment, and the turnout was phenomenal. A lot of good energy, in part due to a few entertaining fans who were drunk enough to really be a part of the show, but not drunk enough to ask us to play “Freebird.”

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Most of the band was at this really amazing Arcade Fire show up at Merriweather Post Pavillion a few years ago. Great night, great music. And they had 2 drummers on full kits with this other crazy dude playing the sh*t out of his huge bass drum. It was awesome; who does that?

Gig you would most like to play?

We like to stay local, and most of our shows have been in line with that. As for a festival, maybe SXSW someday?

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

We’re not just saying this to promote the show, but this coming CD release party on April 27th at Rock n Roll Hotel has Alexis and the Samurai on it. We played with them a few months ago and they are just phenomenal. Other dream bills: Freelance Whales, anything with Jack White in it….

5GB With Crystal Stilts; Playing Rock and Roll Hotel, April 14

If you’ve never been introduced to their take on experimental noise-pop, the Crystal Stilts are primed and ready to take you on a ride. Their latest album In Love With Oblivion will give you the perfect crash course. Coming to Rock and Roll Hotel this Saturday April 14th, JB Townsend of Crystal Stilts joined us as part of our 5G series.

What’s the first gig you’ve ever attended?

Well, most of my life I went to church on Sunday with my folks and there was always a big emphasis on the music at the churches they went to. So I guess I went to a gig every Sunday morning for the first 15 years of my life. The guys playing in the bands certainly treated it like a show.

What is the best gig that you’ve ever played/performed?

We’ve had a lot of fun ones. It’s in the future!

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

White Lion in ’89. Scorpions in ’88. Phish in ’95. All epic.

Gig you would most like to play?

I think it depends- some of the super big festivals could be cool if you’re a big enough band– we’re usually pretty keen on doing most festivals that come our way because they’re a good axis for a tour. All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by somebody interesting would be fun. It tends to be more enticing if there are other bands you know and like playing at it and stuff. Festivals treat you pretty well so they’re usually worthwhile.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I’ve had this question before and I’m always stumped. Probably something so oddly matched that it would have to be weirdly awesome and out there like Cockney Rebel, Love, Wu-Tang, Bo Diddley, Television, Milli Vanilli (headlining) and us. There’s potentially a million different dream shows. The venue I’m not sure of. Dream bill would have to be a dream venue too. Rock’n'Roll Hotel?
