5 GB With Matthew Santos; Playing Black Cat in Washington D.C. Feb 18

By Eileen Tilson

Matthew Santos is an American rock and folk singer-songwriter, musician and painter He is best known for his collaboration with Chicago native Lupe Fiasco on the single “Superstar.” We had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Johnny before their show tomorrow at Black Cat.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

First concert i went to see was of my grandfather playing his trumpet with a huge 40 piece Polka band.  It was a massive polka experience.  They all wore really cool hats too.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

It must have been the Glastonbury Festival with Lupe Fiasco.  100k people in the crowd all singing along to our song, hands waving in the air.  Incredible energy.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

Coachella.  Got to catch Bjork, Black Keys, Chili Peppers, Willie Nelson, Air, and so many others.

Gig you would most like to play?

I heard the Outside Lands Festival is pretty dope.  I’ve played Coachella twice before with Lupe, but I’d love to do it with my own band as well..

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Bon Iver, Feist, Sigur Ros, and myself. It would be at Red Rocks.

Catch Matthew Santos Thursday, Feb. 18th,  at Black Cat Washington, D.C.
