Muhsinah is a classically trained pianist who has spent countless hours honing her skills, whether it’s banging on velocity sensitive pads or brushing the dust from neatly stacked records. With influences spanning from psychedelic to jazz to hip hop and back, this DC native is already forging her own space within the underground. SHe joined us for our 5GB series before her show at the Black Cat.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
I honestly cant remember the first show ive been to. I was big fan of new edition and my family swears we went to see them but i cant remember! I also played piano as a child and and did a lot of recitals. I do remember my mom taking me to see Chick Corea at the Kennedy Center once.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
The best gig I ever played alone was in Toronto at Revival on my Gone Tour, and the best gig ive played as a band member was at the tabernacle in Atlanta with Common, NERD and Janelle Monae. 🙂 great people, great energy, great show.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
One of most memorable shows I’ve ever seen has to be Grace Jones in Barcelona at the Sonar Festival in 2009. Between her costumes and her attitude on stage, I was in heaven. She’s still amazing to me.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
The show I’d most like to play would be a sold out show with my band and an orchestra at an opera house. Doesn’t matter which one, as long as it sounds great. I’d just like to hear it.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
The line up for my dream show would be myself, Prince, Beyonce, Slash, a full orchestra with traditional Chinese and Indian instruments, my friend Spanky McCurdy on drums and a line of drummers playing Taiko drums. There’d be a movie playing behind us and all the music wed play would sound like a score.
