5GB With Fink; Playing DC9, Sept. 27th

Just by the answers alone would I want to see Fink this Thursday at DC9. English singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and DJ, born in Cornwall and currently based in Brighton. Since the 2006 release of his album Biscuits for Breakfast, the name Fink has also referred to the recording and touring trio fronted by Greenall himself, completed by Guy Whittaker (bass) and Tim Thornton (drums). Best known for the 2007 song “This is the Thing” and the 2011 album Perfect Darkness, Fink is signed to independent record label Ninja Tune Records. Greenall’s skills as a songwriter has created a demand for his talents among fellow artists. Most recently he has written in collaboration with John Legend, Ximena Sarinana and Professor Green. With Amy Winehouse he co-wrote the song “Half Time”, which appears on Winehouse’s posthumous collection Lioness: Hidden Treasures..

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

My dad was in folk bands in my youth – so my earliest memories of gigs are like as early as my memories get – I remember the boredom, the beards, the Wife-knit chunky jumpers….the first gig I went to as an adult I guess was probably Jeff Healey – my Father and his Brother and a guy called “Spider”(he had a spidersweb tattood across his whole head – I thought it was awesome) took me and it was pretty awesome – a blind blues guitarist….musicians kinda would stay at my house sometimes and do little gigs in the living room and stuff – many of my parents mates were in bands so really my living room was often a gig….i suppose the first gig I went to because I actually wanted to go was probably Cameo – hey – they were cool – they were….I promise….for a second there – my mate’s Dad was the bouncer at the venue and let us in – I got my first AAA !! soon after that I got into dance music and hip hop and that whole vibe – so it was a while before I though live music wasn’t an anachronism that should be put down.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

This year we had the unbelievable opportunity to do a fink gog with an orchestra – like a real, full blown, get the f*!k outta here royal symphony orchestra….so we did…at the Royal Concertgebauw Hall in Amsterdam….it was ridonculous….there’s an APP for it online where you can see the gig and like interact and stuff – apparently….but yeah – playing your songs to thousands of pople who all dressed up for the gig with a 100 piece symphony orchestra…yeah – that’s gonna be hard to top….

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Radiohead – “South Park Festival” on the album OK Computer….easy – Radiohead had not only released a record that changed music at the time, but I hadn’t heard it yet – I knew it was a monster record – so we waited there at this Radiohead festival – and they came on, played the whole album, little camera everywhere on stage, on instruments, on mics, huge screens….as soon as they started it stopped raining….it was epic….I swore right then and there that I would swap all my career just to be a roadie on that tour….it really was seismic….oh yeah – and the support band….Beck, doing a solo acoustic run through of Sea Change peppered with John Lee Hooker covers as he had just passed away….I mean – impossible….closely followed by System Of A Down at London Astoria – a tiny venue that felt like it was going to literally cave in on us it was so heavy in there….I lost my favourite hat at that gig – I saw it as a sign…

What is the gig you would most like to play?

Mali Desert Music Festival…..just to see and be there – hang with the nomads under the stars, here music from the ages played rght now…..as soon as I can afford the security detail we’re gonna go….

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

If dead people could be resurrected (and not holographically !) – I think it would be 1965 Rolling Stones, 1968 Beatles, 1969 Hendrix, and the headline, 1973 Marley…..if was in an alt mood it would be Joydivision, followed by Can, followed LCD soundsystem
Unless it’s a now thing, as in right now, in which case it would be…Warpaint followed by Bjork…..
