Weekend Picks! Other Lives, Will Turpin & The Way, White Rabbits, and more!!

By: Shelby Lum

Not sure about you, but I am still recovering from the long weekend with family, friends, and way too much food.  Hopefully all of you are getting back into the swing of things, and of course enjoying all the beginnings of Christmas music on the radio.  (I know I am!)  We’ve got some great shows lined up near you this weekend.  Here are our weekend picks.

Friday, November 30th-Tanlines at Black Cat

Duo Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm are bringing their mixture of indie rock and electronic synth music to Black Cat this weekend.  Cohen said to Pitchfork he was always interested in making music “danceable”, essentially meaning you should be ready to dance all night long with Tanlines!

Friday, November 30th-Liberation Dance Party presents Sky Ferreira at DC9

The 20-year-old blonde beauty who has made her name as a model, actress, and singer is now touring on her debut album, which will be released in full next year.  As if that’s not reason enough to go see Ferreira this weekend, she grew up with family friend Michael Jackson.  The Michael Jackson.  What more reason could you need?

Friday, November 30th-Other Lives with Indians at Rock & Roll Hotel

Haven’t had your fill of bearded, folky goodness yet?  Other Lives can help with that.  The indie-folk band out of Oklahoma has toured with Radiohead and Bon Iver and is now touring for their full length album Tamer Animals.  Joining them is Indians at Rock & Roll Hotel.

Saturday, December 1st-Rock by the Sea Charity Christmas Show with Will Turpin & The Way at Vinyl

Since 2006, Rock by the Sea has been raising money to fight cancer.  For a show and a good cause, Will Turpin & The Way (known for his part in Collective Soul) will be at Vinyl this weekend.  Proceeds will go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program in Orlando.  Come to the Vinyl to show your support!

Saturday, December 1st-White Rabbits at Black Cat

Most indie-rock bands stay small.  Most can’t boast great album after great album.  Then there is White Rabbits, the indie band out of Missouri, who have played at Coachella, performed on the Late Show with David Letterman, and toured with the Shins.  Now they are touring on their third studio album, Milk Famous.  Come see them for yourself this weekend!

Saturday, December 1st-Cannibal Corpse with Misery Index at Rock & Roll Hotel

Cannibal Corpse boasts the title of top selling death-metal band in history, and several countries have even banned them from playing within their borders.  Looking for some controversy? Check out what all the fuss is about.  Joining them is Misery Index a deathgrind band out of Baltimore.

Saturday, December 1st-Sean Rivers Band at Peachtree Tavern

Country-pop artist Sean Rivers released his debut studio album earlier this spring, and has been touring and promoting it since.  Raised by a family of musicians, Sean Rivers has been around music since an early age.  The Sean Rivers Band will be at Peachtree Tavern this weekend.

Sunday, December 2nd-Diarrhea Planet at Black Cat

Yes, you did read that title correctly.  This is a band of best friends.  The rock band from Nashville is proof that the country music capital doesn’t produce just country artists, and the lo-fi recording and reverb vocals are anything but controllable.

Sunday, December 2nd-Richard Buckner at DC9

The alternative-country/acoustic musician has been following in Bon Iver’s footsteps.  Recently coming back to a more acoustic sound, Richard Buckner has been touring on his album Our Blood.

Sunday, December 2nd-Southern Story Teller: The Crankies & Minton Sparks at Eddie’s Attic

Three-in-one, Minton Sparks is a storyteller, actor, and singer all at once.  This means her performances are truly one of a kind, and not just concert, but also a show and a story.
