Mates of State are taking time out of recording the follow up to last year’s Mountaintops and hitting the road. In early December they’ll play a string of east coast dates that will be featuring them as the duo lineup – just Jason and Kori, the organ, drums, their voices and their original gear. They joined us for our 5GB series before their show.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
I saw U2 on the Joshua tree tour when I was 13. I wore pink pants with enormously baggy pockets and a pink and black striped shirt but left thinking I should wear all black from then on, like the girl Bono pulled on stage to make out with. The best part was the post-show herd of people leaving while singing “how long must we sing this song” repeatedly.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
There are a few that will always remain meaningful for us. The first time we heard the crowd singing along to our songs was at a little cafe in San Francisco. It was a game changer. We might have had a crowd surfer too. We played a seven song set and had not yet put out a record so the people singing had to have come to see us before. We played for free at noon. We left addicted to playing shows and adopted a motto of: play anywhere, anytime. Also the last time we played Austin was pretty amazing. But, i think everyone loves playing in Austin.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Some of the best shows we’ve seen:
Elliot Smith in Lawrence, KS 1995,
At the Drive In at Bottom of the Hill in SF-1998, Michael Hurly-NYC~ 9 years ago, the Team Dresch reunion show in Brooklyn a couple years ago, Tuneyards at Daniel St in Milford, ct last year, every band at the Simple Machines funeral in DC in 1997, the Hidden Cameras at Bowery ballroom, First Aid Kit-recently in Fairfield, CT 2012…there really isn’t a champion here, just lots of awesome shows.
Gig you would most like to play?
We’d love to play with any of the following: Joanna Newsom, Nick
Cave, Leonard Cohen Stevie Nicks, Liz Phair, Beach House, Bjork, Band of Horses, the Drums, Rufus Wainwright, Neil Young… This list could go on and on.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
All of the above in one gigantic band and I get to pick the songs.
Don’t miss Mates of State Friday, December 7th at Rock & Roll Hotel!
