Preview: Kopecky Family Band at DC9 Tuesday, Feb. 5

By: Taylor Magill

Like all families, Kopecky Family Band beats with the same heart and writes in the same blood. ‘The Family’ began creating music together in Nashville, Tennessee in the Fall 2007. What began as late night talks about life and dreams formed into eccentric and beautiful music that has led to numerous tours, including adventures to CMJ, South By Southwest, and Bonnaroo, three EP releases and relationships forged across the country.

Leading the band are singers Gabe and Kelsey, along with Steven on lead guitar and Corey on bass, with Markus on cello and David on drums. The music takes you on an emotive journey, effortlessly blending together elements of indie, classical, and rock. Many listeners agree that Kopecky Family evokes raw emotion and vulnerability, while challenging the ear of the listener with booming sounds from the 6-piece group. Although the booming, orchestra like sounds evoke challenges to the listening ear, the Kopecky family still produces sweet melodies to sing along with.

The Kopecky Family’s music has taken them on quite a journey in the past couple years. In 2009, they had their debut festival performance at Nashville’s Next Big Nashville Music Festival. In 2010, they played South by Southwest as one of ASCAP’s notable bands to watch.  The Kopeckys followed up SXSW with a  CMJ 2010, where they won over NPR‘s own Bob Boilen and were invited to play at the official Paste Magazine showcase before becoming the darlings of ‘Store-Cute’ and online retailer, Fred Flare. In 2011, they attended Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival for the first time as performers.

With the recent release of their album, Kids Raising Kids, their tour promises to never have a dull moment.

Kopecky Family Band will be at DC9 in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Doors are at 8p.m. and tickets are only $8.00.
