The Technicolors are a musically sophisticated young rock band hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, who blend grand gestures of rock-n-roll with the swagger of brit rock and the songwriting prowess of greats such as Roy Orbison, Noel Gallagher and George Harrison. Their ambitious debut album Listener was released on November 13, 2012 on Bay Area indie label, Tallest Man Records.
Citing influences like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, and the Travelling Wilburys, The Technicolors focused on creating a dynamic album of expansive songs that can be musically complex and artistic and still reach a vast amount of people. Listener weaves ambient electric guitar beds with searing solos punctuated with Smiley’s ernest vocals reminiscent of Oasis and Wolfmother.
We caught up with Nico of The Technicolors before they hit DC next week for their show at the Black Cat. Check out what he had to say about the band’s most memorable gig, strange fan encounters and their upcoming plans!
What has been your most memorable gig thus far?
Salt Lake City, we played with some friends of ours called “Fictionist” and ran out on stage during their last song and danced around like idiots, and we also played to a great crowd…favorite show thus far!
Who came up with the band name and where does the name come from?
That’s a great question…if only we knew!
What is the strangest thing a fan has done at one of your shows?
Danced around like a crazy person, which is fine until we were done playing…and kept dancing, creeping people out. Don’t do drugs kids!
What is the funniest memory you have as a band?
Well on our last tour I filled up our road manager’s socks with fun things like BBQ sauce and ketchup packets, it was hilarious as we all watched him get ready every morning!
How do you connect with your audience?
By melting their faces off with some delicious rock n roll riffs.
What is your dream gig? Lineup? Venue?
Tom Petty opening for us at Wembley Stadium sounds pretty good to me! But that’s a dream… so opening for Tom Petty at the Hollywood Bowl works too.
Do you have any exciting plans coming up?
Yes indeed we do, we’re currently on the road to Austin, Texas to kick off our next tour. We’ve got some TV and radio shows lined up as well, fun activities, like going to the zoo or grabbing an ice cream treat! Follow us on our current adventure and come hang with us if we’re in your town.
