It’s that time again, yes, that special time that comes around once every four years- the World Cup. It’s during this special time that even the most fair-weather soccer fans are transformed into mega fans. And for those of you mega fans who are not fortunate enough to hop a flight to Brazil, we’ve got a way for you to still enjoy all the futbol fun. On Sunday, June 22nd, Atlanta Soccerfest will be hosting soccer fans for a day of activities, food, beverages and, of course, World Cup game viewing.
Soccerfest has something for fans of all ages and interests. The day kicks off with a 5K run and 1 mile Fun Run in the morning. The race will begins at 8am sharp at the entrance to Brookhaven Park located at the corner of Osborne Rd and Peachtree Rd. Participants should arrive at 7:30am, unless they did not pick up their race packet prior to the day of the race, in which case runners should arrive at 7:15am. Show some love for your country and you could win a prize. Runners who come in patriotic costumes will be entered to win a range of prizes. Register for the 5K and Fun Run here, or at any of the local Atlanta Big Peach locations. The cost of the 5K is $30 if you register early and $35 if not. The cost to participate in the Fun Run is $15.
At noon, the real fun begins! For your viewing pleasure, an 11′ x 17′ LED screen will be erected for the ultimate World Cup viewing experience. The first match, between Russia and Belgium, commences at 12pm. The next game, between South Korea and Algeria, will take place at 3pm. Both these matches will lead up to the game of the evening, the match between USA and Portugal, starting at 6pm.
There will be plenty to do throughout the day beside watch the game. Improve your game by attending one of the soccer clinics, the Atlanta Silverbacks will be on site and conducting clinics throughout the afternoon. From noon to 5pm, there will be oodles of soccer activities for the younger ones and tons of prizes to be given away to participants. There will also be a Kid’s Fun Zone featuring bouncy houses, face painters and more!
Atlanta’s most delicious food trucks and street vendors will also be on site to keep you full and fed. And, of course, there will be beer. The libations start flowing at 12:30 (it’s Sunday, remember?). Sidenote: you are permitted to bring your own coolers and food to the park, however, you can’t bring your own booze.
