True Colors Theatre Company Presents Same Time Next Year

Acclaimed director, producer and actor, Kenny Leon, takes the stage of Southwest Arts Center with fellow Tony Award winner, Phylicia Rashad, in Same Time Next Year. The play, written by Bernard Slade and directed by Chris Coleman, is being presented by Leon’s theatre company, True Colors Theatre. Same Time Next Year opened on July 8th and will run through August 3rd.

The plot of the play revolves around a man and a woman- both married to other people- who develop an adulterous arrangement after meeting one day in 1951. The production follows the two characters over a span of 25 years as they agree to meet in the same place at the same time, year after year. Leon describes the deeper meaning of the play like this,  “…you see in the play how people connect. How people grow. How people change. How love and friendship are enduring.” While the premise sounds somewhat serious, the play is actually equal parts touching and hilarious.

Phylicia Rashad, probably best known for her role as Claire Huxtable, and Kenny Leon have worked together for 20 years, yet this is their first time acting together. Previously Leon has always directed Rashad. Their two decades of working together has produced a great professional relationship which translates flawlessly to their onstage love affair. Leon admitted that he was committed to the production before he even read the play once he heard that Rashad was on-board with the idea. “And then I read the play and said ‘oh my God’. We’re going to do this? I have to be onstage with Phylicia Rashad? I have to be in love with her over a 30 year period? And we’re both cheating on our husbands and wives? But it’s a beautiful play about the foundation of a relationship,” said Leon in a GPB interview.
