Farewell Drifters

Where: Eddie’s Attic, Decatur, GA

With their acoustic instrumentation and the anthemic thrust of their songwriting, the Farewell Drifters find themselves in the midst of what’s bound to go down in the annals of popular music history as an era-defining, youthful folk-rock boom. But the Drifters aren’t content simply to stomp, strum and sing with gusto. They bring a unique Brian Wilson-like sensibility to the movement, with intricately arranged harmonies and atmospheric, string-swathed studio shading that is newly showcased on Tomorrow Forever, the quartet’s first album for their new label Compass Records.

SISTER HAZEL

Where: The State Theatre, Falls Church, VA

Sister Hazel is an alternative rock band from Gainesville, Florida, whose style also blends elements of folk rock, pop, classic rock ‘n’ roll and southern rock. Their music is characterized by highly melodic tunes and prominent harmonies. Most of their songs have optimistic lyrics. The band’s instrumentation often features abrupt shifts among electric, acoustic and a cappella, with striking use of tacets. Though often described as alternative, Sister Hazel leans toward an upbeat sound and away from the clashing punk discordance often associated with the alternative rock genre. There’s no changes in band line-up after over 20 years.

The Great Peacock w/ Cute Boots & Johnny Delaware

Where: The EARL, Atlanta, GA

After half a decade spinning wheels on the Great American Highway, through the brutal heartbreaks and dire sacrifices that come with chasing the mythical rock & roll dragon, Great Peacock’s Andrew Nelson and Blount Floyd have finally eased up on the throttle. Like rock & roll as it transitioned from the erratic abandon of the late ’60s to the country-tinged storytelling of the early ’70s—donning cowboy boots and dipping its bucket in the well of American folk music—they’ve put their electric guitars back in the case, rolled their stacks back from 11, and let a serene hush wash over them. Their sound now? Beautiful, unadorned, moving—the bountiful harvest of a deep friendship and an unbreakable musical bond.

Air Supply

Where: Mardi Gras Casino, Hallandale, FL

Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, at rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. In 1980 “Lost in Love” became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts and was named Song of the Year. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell’s simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply.

Jason Fowler & Johnny Awesome

Where: Vinyl, Atlanta, GA

Just read the lyrics to any one of your favorite Led Zeppelin tunes and chances are you would be quite familiar with the life story of singer and musician, Jason Fowler. Only his story is still being written. Jason Fowler has lived a life that truly reflects art- troubled to some, enviable to many and yet remarkable to most anyone who hears the soft-spoken Atlanta, Georgia native recount it. Fowler admits that his diehard, all-or-nothing approach to life has sometimes been both a blessing and a curse. Living a rock-n-roll lifestyle eventually caused the artist to hit rock bottom. “At rock bottom,” Jason says, “Is where I began recovering from a place of hopelessness.” He adds, “It is also where I discovered that it was not God who left me, but I who left Him.” It has been almost a decade since he made that discovery.  Now, Jason Fowler has dedicated his life to telling everyone he meets how Christ redeemed his life and brought him to the other side.
