Venue Spotlight: Jannus Live

St. Petersburg, Florida is home to the longstanding concert venue known today as Jannus Live. A group of small promoters, Rob Douglas, Tony Rifugiato and Dave Hundley, had the idea to stage reggae and punk rock shows in a courtyard that was encased in a downtown block of St. Petersburg.  At its founding in 1984 the venue was called Jannus Landing, and was named after pilot Tony Jannus.

Quickly Jannus Landing became a hotspot for up-and-coming artists, cult favorites and underground legends in the Tampa Bay area. It’s said that Jannus hosted more debut shows than any other Bay area venue, including acts like Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Neville Brothers and so much more!  During its first few years, Jannus Landing was a venue almost exclusively for local acts, but in 1987, the venue hosted Red Hot Chili Peppers as its first mainstream performer. Since then, world famous artists like Eminem, Marilyn Manson, and the Beastie Boys  have performed on its stage.

Jannus continued to flourish as a venue throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s; however, in 2009, it closed in unfortunate circumstances. But the doors didn’t stay closed for long, because at the end of 2009, Jeff Knight, a businessman with nightclub experience, bought the venue. In 2010, the venue reopened as the newly renovated and renamed Jannus Live. The renovation of the venue included changes like adding indoor plumbing, improved bar service, a refurbished balcony with private suites available for rent, and bringing the venue capacity up to nearly 2,000 guests.

So when you’re in the Tampa Bay area, head over to Jannus Live for an amazing concert experience!
