5GB With Rocky Votolato; Playing The Red Palace, Friday May 25th

CD Review: Amy LaVere – Stranger Me; Playing with Rich Robinson at Smith’s Olde Bar, March 2 and Red Palace on March 17

Amy LaVere
Stranger Me
Archer Records

By Al Kaufman

Turbulent times often leads to great art. Such is the case with Amy LaVere. While preparing to make her third album three years ago, her producer and mentor, Jim Dickenson, died of complications from triple bypass surgery. Then her guitarist, Steve Selvidge, left to join The Hold Steady. But what really made things sticky was when she broke up with longtime boyfriend and drummer, Paul Taylor. She missed his studio presence and he ended up agreeing to drum on the album, creating that delicious tension that is evident in other groups with broken relationships, such as Fleetwood Mac and Eurythmics. LaVere also recruited Craig Silvey (who mixed Arcade Fire’s Suburbs) to produce, and multi-weird-instrumentalist Rick Steff (who plays the mellotron, theramin, Buddha box, Vibrachime, and various pianos), left of center guitarist David Cousar, and a slew of horn instrumentalists to create her most richly textured album to date. We Are Augustines
Rise Ye Sunken Ships
Backbeat/Turnout

By Al Kaufman

Too many people think that if they have had a hard life, all they need to do is write about it and people will think they are geniuses. Sure, the melody may never get going, the lyrics may be a bit clunky, “But it’s a true story, man. Isn’t that amazing?” Those people need to listen to We Are Augustines to see how to do it right.

Songwriter, lead singer and guitarist William McCarthy has had as tough a life as anyone. He never knew his father. His mother was an alcoholic schizophrenic and her children ended up in foster care. His brother, James, was also a schizophrenic who lived in and out of institutions prisons. At about the time his original band, Pela, was breaking up, McCarthy’s brother committed suicide. McCarthy, along with Pela bassist, guitarist, keyboardist, and songwriter Eric Sanderson, and drummer Rob Allen, regrouped to form We Are Augustines. Picking the name was easy. McCarthy and Sanderson both have August birthdays, Pela dissolved in August, and McCarthy’s brother committed suicide the same month. August plays a heavy role in the band’s life. Apex Manor
The Year of Magical Drinking
Merge

By Al Kaufman

In 2009, Ross Flournoy’s power-pop Southern California band, The Broken West, parted ways. Flournoy moved to Pasadena and developed a strong case of writer’s block. An NPR Monitor Mix competition, in which he was forced to write and record a song in a weekend, led to “Under the Gun,” which, on The Year of Magical Drinking, is a pop gem that sounds like one of the best things Jeff Tweedy and Wilco never recorded. Great drums, cool guitar riffs, and either about songwriting or chastising a friend or girlfriend for giving up on him when he was down. Or maybe both. Young the Giant
Young the Giant
Roadrunner

Young the Giant conjures up the melodic grandeur of The Killers in their prime. Although Sameer Gadhia’s vocals do not resonate with quite the same authority as those of Brandon Flowers’, there is no denying the band’s music is captivating and, at times, downright thrilling.
